I am not a saint or sadhvi: says Jaya Kishori on Rs 2 lakh handbag controversy

Jaya Kishori, a renowned 29-year-old spiritual orator, motivational speaker, and musical artist, has recently attracted media scrutiny after being spotted with an extravagant Rs 2 lakh Dior "Book Tote" handbag while at an airport. The luxury bag, characterized by its high price and designer label, has triggered widespread discussion about Kishori's views on materialism and spirituality, given her status as a public figure who preaches detachment from worldly possessions.

In the wake of the controversy, Kishori took to social media and traditional media outlets to clarify the situation. She asserted that her Dior bag is not made from leather but is instead a customized fabric piece, specifically designed to meet her preferences. "I have never used leather, nor will I ever use it," she stated emphatically. The Dior "Book Tote" is known for its high-quality craftsmanship and is often sought after by fashion enthusiasts.

However, critics have pointed out that despite Kishori's claims about the bag's materials, the brand's reputation is closely tied to luxury and leather goods, including calfskin products. Detractors on social media highlighted this contradiction, questioning how a spiritual leader who advocates for simplicity and non-attachment to material wealth could justify such a lavish accessory. One social media user remarked, “The preacher, who speaks about worshipping cows, is using a bag from a company that makes its products from cow leather.” Kishori's messaging to her audience focuses on the importance of hard work and self-fulfillment. She explained that her lifestyle choices reflect her belief that individuals can enjoy the fruits of their labor without guilt.

"You should work hard and earn money so that you can have a good, comfortable life for yourself and your family," she stated.  Additionally, Kishori's teachings encompass a broader philosophy that encourages individuals to embrace both their spiritual and material lives. She emphasizes that wealth should not be demonized but rather viewed as a means to enhance one's quality of life. Her public persona promotes a balanced approach to living, where spirituality and material success can coexist harmoniously. Kishori also expressed that her personal journey has been rooted in family values and community, stressing that she has not renounced anything in her life.
